Reading during the summer helps students maintain the skills they learned throughout the school year and prepares them for a successful start in the fall. Just 15–20 minutes of reading each day can help improve fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.
Encourage your child to read books, magazines, graphic novels, or any reading material that interests them. Making reading a daily habit can help prevent the "summer slide" and keep young minds growing all summer long!
Happy Reading! ☀️📖✨

White House Press Release - Second Lady Usha Vance Launches 2026 Summer Reading Challenge
June 01, 2026
On Monday, June 1, 2026, Second Lady Usha Vance announced the start of her second annual Summer Reading Challenge, which will run through September 4, 2026.
"I'm thrilled to bring back my Summer Reading Challenge for another year! The challenge will help kids fall in love with reading outside the classroom and stave off summer learning loss. Prizes and friendly competition will add to the fun. I'm so thankful to our partners, including the parents who are helping us make this a summer full of reading for kids across the country," said Second Lady Usha Vance.
Ms. Vance launched the Summer Reading Challenge as part of her broader focus on childhood literacy. In 2024, only 31% of fourth graders and 30% of eighth graders were reading above the proficient level for their grade. Literacy levels decline even further over the course of the summer, as students may lose up to 2-3 months of reading skills that they acquired during the school year.
Over 20,000 children participated in last year's pilot program, across all 50 states and multiple territories. This year's expanded challenge features more partners, prizes, and a state-by-state leaderboard online.
To enter, children in grades K-8 can download a reading log online and submit it after they have read 12 books. Participants will receive a personalized certificate, America 250th-themed bookmark, prize, and chance to win a trip to visit the White House.
Please visit wh.gov/read for more information.

🚀💻 Engineering the Future — One Circuit at a Time! 💻🚀
STEM Lab has been buzzing with excitement as students powered through the engineering design process to build their very own Piper Computers! From carefully following schematics to assembling hardware components, these young engineers moved step-by-step from imagine ➡️ design ➡️ build ➡️ test ➡️ improve.
Students explored real-world engineering concepts while wiring circuits, connecting components, and troubleshooting like true tech pros. When something didn’t work the first time? No problem! They debugged, redesigned, and tried again — proving that persistence is part of the process. 💡🔧
Through hands-on problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, our students weren’t just building computers… they were building resilience, innovation skills, and confidence.
You could say they didn’t just plug in — they powered up their learning! ⚡✨

🔬🪱 STEM in Action in First Grade! 🪱🔬
Ms. Courtney Sasso’s AMAZING first graders wrapped up their science unit on living vs. nonliving with a hands-on STEM learning lab that was equal parts educational and exciting!
Students became real scientists as they:
🧐 Observed differences in movement and structure
✋ Touched & examined textures and features
📏 Measured length and compared data
📝 Recorded observations like true researchers
The big investigation? Comparing living earthworms to nonliving gummy worms!
Through this interactive lab, students applied key STEM skills — asking questions, making predictions, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. They discovered that living things grow, move on their own, and need food and water… while nonliving things do not!
And let’s just say… some of the “nonliving specimens” may have mysteriously disappeared during the experiment. 😄🍬 #ForScience
We are so proud of these curious, hands-on learners who are building critical thinking skills one investigation at a time! 🧠✨ #SPE #PineviewPride #STEMStartsEarly #FutureScientists

🧮🔐 120 Days Smarter & Stronger! 🔐🧮
Yesterday our incredible FIRST GRADE mathematicians celebrated the 120th Day of School in the most STEM-tastic way possible! 🎉
Because their math benchmark requires students to count forward AND backward within 120, our amazing 1st grade teachers turned this big milestone into a hands-on learning adventure — a 120th Day Math-Themed Escape Room Challenge! 🚀
Students had to:
🔢 Solve number puzzles
↩️ Count forward and backward within 120
🧠 Use critical thinking skills
🤝 Work as a team to unlock clues
This wasn’t just a celebration… it was real-world problem solving, collaboration, and perseverance in action! 💡✨
We are SO proud of our brilliant first graders for rising to the challenge and proving that math can be exciting, engaging, and full of adventure!
120 days down… and they’re just getting started! 💙📚
